British Council School PREE Programme 2

Objectives of the PREE Programme

The PREE Programme, approved by the Spanish Council of Ministers on 4 August 2020 through Royal Decree 737/2020, aims to promote the energy-efficient rehabilitation of existing buildings in Spain. This initiative focuses on reducing final energy consumption and CO₂ emissions across the national building stock. The programme encourages actions that improve energy efficiency, such as renewing thermal insulation, replacing thermal generation systems with more efficient and sustainable alternatives, and integrating advanced regulation and control technologies. These measures align with the objectives of Spain’s Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) 2021–2030 and support the transition towards a low-carbon economy. For more information: https://www.idae.es/index.php/ayudas-y-financiacion/para-la-rehabilitacion-de-edificios/convocatorias-cerradas/programa-pree

Project Description

The British Council School has undertaken an energy rehabilitation project as part of the PREE Programme. This initiative aims to improve the school’s energy efficiency by implementing sustainable measures that will reduce both energy consumption and CO₂ emissions, thus contributing to energy transition and sustainable development.

Actions Undertaken

Under the PREE programme for energy rehabilitation in existing buildings, regulated by Royal Decree 737/2020, the following eligible actions have been carried out:

  • Type 1 Actions: Improving the energy efficiency of the thermal envelope.
  • Type 2 Actions: Enhancing the energy efficiency of thermal systems for heating, cooling, and domestic hot water (DHW).
An application for €481,895.35 has been submitted to cover 30% of the total cost of these actions.

Objectives Achieved

  1. Improved the building’s energy rating by one level, achieving a B rating.
  2. Reduced energy consumption by over 10% for each action type implemented.
  3. Increased energy autonomy with a new photovoltaic installation of 80 solar panels on the roof.

European Union Financial Support

This project has been partially funded by Next Generation EU European Funds, within the framework of Spain’s Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan. The support received from the European Union has been essential for this energy rehabilitation, which will not only improve the British Council School’s energy efficiency but also contribute to the EU’s climate objectives.
