Mercedes Hernández Estrada, our headmistress since the 2018-2019 academic year. After 6 years at this School, she knows the project and has been able to be present both in the organisation of BIOOR events and in the acts themselves. Today she tells us about the achievements of this initiative, the commitment of the families and what BIOOR is for her.

Could you tell us about some of the most outstanding achievements of this initiative?

BIOOR has crossed milestones and met objectives, but the achievement I would like to highlight is its longevity as it has reached its 20th anniversary. Other equally fundamental achievements include bringing the community together, reflecting the values of the school and the commitment of our students and families, as well as supporting research into childhood cancer. The latter, although it may seem an easy task, is often forgotten or not given the time or interest it requires. I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that research is everyone's business and anyone can do their bit.

We know that the school is fully committed to the cause, but how committed are the families and students?

BIOOR is an amazing initiative, but if there is one thing that is clear; it is that this would go nowhere without the commitment of our students and their families. Each term they are involved in new activities and workshops to raise donations based on active engagement and solidarity as well as contributing to sustainability. We take advantage of this time to recycle textbooks and uniforms, as well as giving a second life to the pupils' toys and stuffed animals. One initiative that I really like is the "Medical appointment for your cuddly toy". This idea aims to create a space where students can bring their stuffed animals and "cure" them so that they have an everlasting life.

What does BIOOR mean to you?

For me, BIOOR represents more than just a name or an entity; it is a symbol of perseverance, hope and community. It grew out of a group of students in a time of grief. This project has evolved into a meaningful legacy that has grown over time. It is a tangible reminder of how even in the darkest of times, creativity, collaboration and commitment can lead to light. BIOOR embodies the idea of turning adversity into opportunity, of turning pain into progress.
