The local news outlet EnPozuelo has highlighted the football and inclusion event we organised in collaboration with the British Embassy.

Former international footballers Keka Vega and Jade Boho took to the fields of British Council School in Pozuelo de Alarcón, leading an unforgettable day for 150 children from various public schools across the Community of Madrid.

This football event, titled ‘Queen of the Court’, is part of the GameChangers initiative, launched by the British Embassy, British Council, and VisitBritain. Its goal is to promote equality and diversity in sport, inspiring new generations to believe in themselves and break down barriers. This project is part of GREAT, the UK’s international marketing campaign.

During the event, Year 5 pupils from CEIP San Juan Bautista and CEIP El Quijote, both part of the Bilingual Education Programme, joined British Council School pupils for a session where football and education truly ruled the court. The children took part in dynamic training exercises, practising dribbling, passing, and shooting under the guidance of Vega and Boho.

Cristina Vega Leandro ‘Keka’ commented: “Competing both in and outside Spain taught me that sport is much more than winning titles; it’s about overcoming challenges, embracing diversity, and growing as individuals. Today, I want to inspire both girls and boys to break down barriers, explore new cultures, and empower themselves through sport and knowledge.”

Former international footballer Jade Boho Sayo added: “Football has led me to discover different cultures, face challenges, and, most importantly, appreciate the value of inclusion and equality. We want to be role models for new generations, showing that with hard work and respect for diversity, it is possible to achieve our dreams both on and off the pitch.”

The British Council’s philosophy champions intergenerational learning, where young people have the opportunity to learn directly from professional athletes with extensive careers. In this case, Vega and Boho not only shared their expertise but also their stories of perseverance and success, demonstrating how women’s football continues to break barriers and challenge stereotypes.

This event is supported by the ‘GameChangers’ campaign under GREAT, celebrating the UK’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion through athletes and activities that truly change the game. GREAT is the UK government’s international marketing campaign, showcasing the very best the country has to offer.
