Emotional intelligence makes us happy because it allows us to control our emotions, makes us feel more secure in our surroundings and makes those around us feel more comfortable too. It helps us to maintain our own wellbeing. The Schools' own values summarise the key principles of emotional intelligence: Caring, Flexibility, Resilience, Challenege, Loyalty.
The concept of emotional intelligence was made popular by the American psychologist, Daniel Coleman and refers to the ability to recognise one's own feelings and those of others. A person is therefore inteligent (able) to control his own feelings.
As well as maintaining the Schools' Values on a day to day basis, our Year 8 and Year 9 students will now also be able to learn more about this by participating in an“Emotional Intelligence Programme”which will be led by the Schools' Guidance Department. The programme will consist of a Family Assembly, in which topics such as the importance of identifying and managing emotions, self-motivation, empathy and improving social relationships, will be explored and developed further.
The programme will begin the week of the 24th of October and finish on the 4th of November.
